Asian New Year, Let’s Celebrate!

Many thanks to our International Education and ELL Dept. for organizing an excellent New Year celebration on Jan. 19th which was attended by parents, students, and staff. A very big thank you to Mr. Tong, Home Ec teacher and his crew who catered the event.  It was wonderful to see students perform through music and dance as well taste some wonderful food.  We all really enjoyed our students doing the Lion Dance as it wound its way through our school cafeteria.  What a great evening.!  Thank you to teachers:  Ms. Sampson, Ms. Chatha, Ms. Batalha, Ms. Schrader, and Mr. Tong for making it happen.  Also special thanks to Ms. Selina Wong, Multicultural Worker for her support.

Course Selection Fair

On Jan. 11th we held a Course Selection Fair in our school cafeteria for all students in grades 8 – 10. We are kicking off course selection for the 2012 – 13 school year and we want students to make their choices for next year. This was a great opportunity to view samples of student’s work, videos, posters, and displays and to get some information on new courses. We followed this up with grade 7 tours and a course selection evening for grade 7’s and their parents. We had an excellent turnout for both events and it was great to see all the course offerings. It was also wonderful to meet all the grade 7’s, our future Firehawks, and have a chance to welcome them to our school.

Math Challengers

Each friday at lunch approximately 25 math students meet with Math teacher and coach, Mrs. Pervin Buhariwala to work on Math Challenger. The students and the teacher are all volunteering their time once a week to prepare for competitions coming up in February at SFU.  As they get closer to exam time, they will be meeting two lunch hours a week. Its great to see the students are getting excellent results. Fraser Heights Math Challenger students in grade 8 and 9 are among the top ten schools in BC. I am so impressed by their dedication.

The past Math Challengers contest  results are on the URL: http://www.apeg.bc.ca/mathchallengers/Results.html
Fraser Heights participated in the Math Challengers contest since 2010 only so this will be our third year of participation. Students are excited and work very hard. We are looking forward to more great results.
